TT-978: Battery Room Safety - Signage & Posting
Clear, concise warning signs prevent accidents, alert staff of potential dangers, and contribute to a safe and well-run warehouse. According to several safety agencies signage is also a requirement to comply with federal regulations. BHS provides Signage and Posting that can be purchased as a kit or individually to ensure compliance.
Description:
The Occupational Health and Safety Administration states:
“Caution signs shall be used only to warn against potential hazards or to caution against unsafe practices.
All employees shall be instructed that caution signs indicate a possible hazard against which proper precaution should be taken.
Safety instruction signs shall be used where there is a need for general instructions and suggestions relative to safety measures.”
(OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145(c)(2-3))
The National Fire Protection Association states:
“Doors or accesses into the following shall be provided with approved signs:
(1) Battery storage buildings, (2) Rooms containing stationary storage battery systems (3) Other areas containing stationary storage battery systems.”
(NFPA 1 Chapter 52.3.8.1)
“For rooms that contain flooded lead acid or flooded Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-CD) batteries, the signs required by 52.3.8.1 shall state the following: This room contains:
(1) Stationary storage battery systems (2) Energized electrical circuits (3) Corrosive battery electrolyte”
(NFPA 1 Chapter 52.3.8.3)
Recommendation:
Ensure compliance with regulations, improve safety, notify personnel of hidden dangers, and prevent accidents in the workplace with the BHS Signage and Posting Kit (SP-1), which contains nine signs for display in the battery room. The SP-1 also includes signs to clearly identify the location of emergency equipment for quick response. The kit is also available in Spanish and all signs are available individually.
