EV Charging Station Infrastructure and Compliance

Numerous safety standards and guidelines place limits on how you store EV chargers and cables. The most notable of these is the National Electrical Code (NEC), but it’s not the only one. EV Charger Handling equipment from BHS, Inc. can help you remain compliant with requirements from the NEC and elsewhere.  

For example, here are just a few of the standards that EV Charger Pedestals and Cable Management Kits can help to meet: 

  • 2023 NEC 625.17 (C) Overall Cord and Cable Length. This standard requires cable management systems for all charging cables longer than 25 feet (7.5 meters). Of course, shorter cables also benefit from cable management solutions, but they aren’t mentioned in this part of the NEC.   
  • 2023 NEC 625.50 Location. In most scenarios, the NEC requires EV charging equipment to be stored 18 inches (450 millimeters) above ground-level for indoor EV charging stations. Outdoors, that requirement is 24 inches (600 millimeters) above the ground. 
  • ADA Accessibility Standard 308.3.1 Unobstructed Side Reach. Many public-facing EV charging stations must comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). According to this ADA Accessibility Standard, these EV charging stations must not post operable parts of chargers higher than 48 inches (1,219 millimeters) off the ground. 

This list is not comprehensive, of course. Other standards EV charging stations might need to comply with include IEC 61851, CSA C22.2 No. 280-2022, and others in development. Standard models of BHS EV Charger Handling equipment may support compliance with specific safety regulations — and, if not, custom designs are available to meet any specification.
