Electrical Material Carts Provide Protection, Transportation, and Secure Storage

Electricians work with far more than cable, wire, and other coiled materials. They must also handle awkwardly shaped products such as light fixtures, transformers, distribution boxes, and bulk quantities of conduit. These materials require specialized equipment with ergonomic design and dependable, heavy-duty construction.

Traditional material carts create a productivity drag when paired with electrical components. Even worse, they may require employees to maintain awkward postures or attempt more manual lifts. These practices seriously increase the risk of musculoskeletal injury among workers.

Electrical Material Carts from BHS are designed specifically for electrical products, with ergonomic features to improve workplace safety. Learn more about any of the products listed below by clicking on the link. Call the BHS sales team at 1.800.BHS.9500 to find your nearest dealer.

Ergonomics for Electricians: The Value of Material Carts

Electricians and others who work with electrical materials face certain ergonomic risks related to handling these products on a day-to-day basis. In fact, over the four-year period between 1999 and 2002, 30 percent of compensation claims among members of the IEC were related to ergonomics, with a total cost of more than $10 million.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration lists four risk factors associated with handling electrical supplies:

  • Heavy manual lifts are particularly dangerous for the soft tissues of the shoulders and back. The risk only increases with repetition. Bundles of conduit and transformers are just a few examples of electrical products workers should not attempt to lift from ground level. Carts provide transportation without manual lifting.
  • Repositioning electrical products often requires carrying, pushing, or pulling. With inadequate material handling carts to reduce the exertion required to move an item, workers may strain their muscles moving components across facilities or job sites. Electrical Material Carts from BHS feature ergonomic push/pull handles, fork pockets, and smooth-rolling casters to help to alleviate this risk factor.
  • Staging materials in distant locations increases walking distance, which worsens hazards associated with carrying heavy loads. Carts allow users to carry light fixtures, conduit, or other materials safely throughout the facility or job site. Most BHS Electrical Material Carts are designed to fit through standard door sizes.
  • In order to load and unload supplies from trucks, workers often have to adopt awkward postures or lift heavy loads. Material Carts from BHS are fitted with both casters and steel fork pockets; simply lift them with a forklift to transport full loads of conduit, cable, and fixtures into trucks.

In addition to these ergonomic benefits, Electrical Material Carts can improve productivity and reduce product loss. Light fixtures can be quite fragile, but leaving them in protective packaging until the moment of installation slows down installation electricians in the field.

Light Fixture Carts provide an ideal solution. The unit travels with electricians, allowing them to quickly grab a fully unpackaged fixture the moment they need one. This cart also protects materials, with vinyl-lined trays, steel construction, and removable locking bars.
