TT-957: Level Assist Indicator

Tech Tip-957: Level Assist Indicator

Models Affected: BE-MT, BE-SL, DS, TS, & QS

The Level Assist Indicator (BE-LAI) visually alerts the operator that the roller bed of the Battery Extractor (BE) is vertically aligned with the roller bed of a stand or lift truck.

Description:

Proper alignment between the BE roller bed and the battery stands and/or lift trucks while transferring batteries is very important. Transferring the battery into the stands with the BE roller bed just two inches higher than the stand rollers can result in the battery crashing onto the stand with over 28,000 lb. of force, typically between the second and third rollers. This could damage the rollers and bearings as well as the structural components of the stand. Attempting to transfer the battery with the roller bed too low can also result in damage to the lead roller in the stand or lift truck. Ensuring that the roller beds are properly aligned vertically before attempting to transfer a battery saves time and prevents damage.

The Level Assist Indicator (BE-LAI) consists of a photo-electric sensor mounted on the inner frame of the BE, adhesive reflective strips attached to a panel of the outer frame of the BE, and an indicator light mounted on the operator dash. To ensure that each level indication is correct, the reflective strips are attached with the roller bed set to the exact level to be indicated after installation is complete. Once installed, as the inner carriage of the BE travels up or down the sensor detects the reflective strips. Each time a strip is detected the indicator light on the dashboard illuminates, alerting the operator that the BE roller beds are vertically aligned with a designated level.

Recommendation:

The BE-LAI is an available option on most BE units. Parts kits are also available for field installation on existing BE units. Contact BHS Technical Support or your local BHS Dealer for information on the required kit for your specific BE.
