December 12, 2017 — St. Louis, Missouri — BHS, Inc., a leading manufacturer of material handling and battery changing equipment, is raising funds for a local family through the United Way of Greater St. Louis. The annual tradition provides an opportunity for staff to share their prosperity with less fortunate residents of the St. Louis area.
The United Way of Greater St. Louis and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch jointly sponsor the 100 Neediest Cases campaign every year. The effort began in 1922, and in 1954, the newspaper started profiling the top 100 cases that social workers had referred to them.
The program is now one of the most successful and popular fundraisers in St. Louis. Donors can give money or buy specific items and gifts for families. The program raised $400 in 1922 and has steadily increased until raising $1.3 million last year.
BHS incentivized donations by matching dollar for dollar every contribution from staff.
“The families from the Neediest Cases list are struggling to get by,” said Melissa Bowen, from BHS, Inc.’s marketing team. “They can’t afford the basics, much less Christmas gifts. We want to make sure that the family we adopt will have a very happy holiday.”
BHS has a long tradition of donating money and equipment to local charities, but the 100 Neediest Cases campaign remains one of the most important to staff. Between the heart-wrenching stories and the unique opportunity to help a specific family in the community, the outreach is a special one to the BHS team.
“The personal nature of the campaign allows us to feel the tangible, concrete effect on a family’s holiday season,” said Bowen. “To make that kind of impact just by sharing what we have makes this a really important tradition to all of us.”
